The turbine hall, generating hall or turbine building is a building or room in any steam cycle or hydroelectric power plant which houses a number of components vital to the generation of electricity from the steam that comes from the boiler, or from the water coming from the reservoir.

• One of the smallest working true nuclear reactors ever built was Los Alamos National Lab’s DUFF space reactor. The DUFF space reactor is an example of what can still be done in the way of nuclear reactor innovation today.

• The plant has two Westinghouse-designed 4-loop pressurized-water nuclear reactors operated by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). The facility is located on about 900 acres (360 ha) west of Avila Beach, California, of which about 12 acres form the power-producing portion of the plant.

The FSAR is available for public viewing, usually at a public library near the nuclear plant. The containment building itself is typically an airtight steel structure enclosing the reactor normally sealed off from the outside atmosphere. The steel is either free-standing or attached to the concrete missile shield.

Building a nuclear reactor A nuclear reactor is constructed by placing a Nuclear Reactor block, and optionally surrounding it with up to 6 Reactor Chambers. Right-click on the reactor to access its internal inventory, which will be a grid that is 3x6 (for a single reactor block) to 9x6 (for a full 6 reactor chamber build).

All individual CANDU units on site are connected to this vacuum building by a large pressure relief duct which is also part of containment. The vacuum building rapidly draws in and condenses any steam from a postulated break, allowing the reactor building pressure to return to subatmospheric conditions.

Eskom, as expected, has moved to calm fears about the nuclear reactor building. Although they list their main concerns as the ‘externally exposed concrete surfaces’, they also made it clear that the Koeberg facility can withstand ‘even the most severe accident’, playing down the chance of a possible radioactive catastrophe.
