The FastA Algorithm The FastA algorithm allows for the comparison of a query sequence to a DNA sequence database. The algorithm uses a fast search to initially identify sequences from the database with a high degree of similarity to the query sequence. Then it conducts a second comparison on the selected sequences.

What is FASTA format?

  • In bioinformatics , FASTA format is a text-based format for representing either nucleotide sequences or peptide sequences , in which nucleotides or amino acids are represented using single-letter codes.

What is FASTA file?

  • FASTA files are Data Files primarily associated with dnaLIMS Fasta Library (dnaTools). FASTA files are also associated with FASTA Format DNA and Protein Sequence Alignment and FileViewPro. Additional types of files may also be using the FASTA file extension.

FASTA is another sequence alignment tool which is used to search similarities between sequences of DNA and proteins. The query sequence is broken down into sequence patterns or words known as k-tuples and the target sequences are searched for these k-tuples in order to find the similarities between the two.
